The normal focus of a sentence is usually on the object. However, to highlight the focus of a sentence even more, underline the new information or to distinguish it from something else, focus highlighting can be used, which puts a strong emphasis on the highlighted noun.
The highlighted focus is formed by adding nej + an inflected pronoun (the original case and number of the focus) after the noun in nominative.
Puk gráj čerň. The boy reads a book.
Čerň nej me puk gráj. It's the book the boy reads.
Lokov kudra baš devčinu. The man likes this woman.
Devčina baš nej me lokov kudra. It's this girl that the man likes.
Šelčem Querítelu. I live in Querítel.
Querítel nej tih šelčem. It's Querítel where I live.
Please note the nej doesn't inflect, but the pronoun has to agree in person with the referent,i.e., if the focus is the speaker himself, the pronoun will be in the 1.p., etc.
Jaš nej ne sajňije kudra. It's me who she likes more. (Please note the pronoun is ne, not tih).
Taj nej de ročňije kudra. It's you who she likes less.
